Only in America

Where have you heard of a volunteer citizen group going out and spending their weekend spare time to clean their local river?
Where have you seen people go out of their way to help the needy?Isn't it a wonderful sight to see people honk and donate a few dollars to the person who is collecting for some cause at the stop lights?

As Alexis de Tocqueville observed more than 170 years ago, a defining characteristic of the American people is their commitment to service.

Today, the ethics and the value system of the american public are still going strong.Children as young as preschoolers are introduced to the concept of community service with little projects like making no sew blankets for the homeless in the winter . I was spell bound when my 4 year old asked me one day after school why he has 4 jackets while a homeless boy in Detroit has none. They had talked about why they were putting together blankets for the needy at preschool.

America’s young people – from preschoolers to university students – have the desire, energy and ability to make a real difference in their communities. Service-learning offers a unique opportunity for them to get involved in a tangible way by integrating community service projects with classroom learning. Service-learning engages students in the educational process, using what they learn in the classroom to solve real-life problems. Students not only learn about democracy and citizenship, they become actively contributing citizens and community members through the services that they perform.

According to the national service website,in 2007, 60.8 million volunteers dedicated 8.1 billion hours of service to community organizations.

In these trying times when all one seems to hear are stories of greed and lack of accountability in the corporate sector high up in the ladder,it is very heartwarming to know that the people in the grassroots level have warm hearts and help out each other. It is the strength and integrity of the masses that actually makes or breaks a society/country...Isn't it?
