Slumdog Millionaire

The movie was good, but did it deserve all the awards and honours...hardly.Here's why!It was neither a fantastic fable like the original book,Q &A written by Vikas Swarup nor was it a social reality. The director Danny Boyle has failed to separate them and consequently the audience is left confused Agreed, all the hellish things do happen in the underbellies of Mumbai..But everything to happen to one same person is beyond reality. It streaches reason and makes one wonder if they packed every negative thing a westerner perceives about India into the movie for crowd pleasing purposes...
A motivated filmmaker who has no connection to the "American Experience"can make a movie about ,say,an african american boy from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. We all know about the horrible things that happenned during and after. If the movie depicts that all the bad things happen to this one boy, however spectacularly made, would it receive an Oscar nomination or widely accepted as a good film?I doubt  it!
Nevertheless,This should be an eyeopener for everyone who has any sense of social responsibility.India has been shamed in front of the international community once again to clean up its social evils. What are we going to do about it is the big question.
The reason it is so popular is because the western world is so intrigued by India and its growth and presence in the world scene and want to learn more about the country and community as a whole.India is too vast and diverse to be understood by just watching commercial films, but there is not whole lot of  other choices for the people around the world.
If you ask me,if we care so much about what others think of us,Lets do something about it.Indian filmmakers, putting aside  their money making mentality for once, should make a propoganda documentary to portray the real India.I'm not saying it is going to be easy, but it will be well worth the effort. The Govt should support whoever is courageous enough to take up such a complex project with tax incentives....
