This is my improv on my mom's recipe!
Ingredients
To Pressure cook
Rice 1cup
Toor Dhal 1/2 cup
Turmeric 1 tsp
To roast and grind
Channa Dhal 4 tsp
Toor Dhal 1 tsp
Coriander Seeds 1/4 cup
Red Chillies 8
Cloves 4
Cinnamon 1 inch
Elaichi 4
Sombu 1 tsp
Cumin 1/2 tsp
Pepper 1/2 tsp
Coconut 1/4 cup
To cook
Onions 2
Tomato 1
Vegetables 2 cups
Tamarind size of a small lime,soaked in warm water and strained
Salt To taste
To Garnish
Mustard Seeds
Bay leaves
Curry leaves
Method:
Pressure cook Rice and Dhal mixed with 5 cups water .Keep aside.
In a large pot heat oil/ghee and add mustard seeds,bay leaves and curry leaves.After the mustard seeeds splutter,add onions,tomatoes and the cooked vegetables.Add salt enough for the vegetables and stir.Add the tamarind juice and some water and bring the mixture to a boil.Then add the roasted and ground mixture and let it boil.Now add salt enough for the rice(about 2 tsp) and then add the cooked rice and dhal .Stir well and let it simmer for 10 min.
Garnish with cilantro and serve hot with raita or potato fry.
You can also add some ghee at the time of serving for more flavour.
